Picture of the Week

Never lose sight of the fact that Islamist fascists in parts of the world are far, far worse than Christian theocrats in the west. The latter group, this time in the form of the Iranian regime, actually hang young gays:

  • Good point.

I guess the peripheral point I would make is, some christians have been known to do equally brutal things to gays as well, even if the things aren't sanctioned by the state in question.

    But yes, you are correct.

  • Yeah, gay bashing - even to the point of death - is certainly an issue in our culture but can you imagine the sort of unofficial persecution this sort of official punishment encourages? I cannot believe that the situation here for minorities, especially gays, is even close to as bad as it is over there.

  • Well this is also a country that held a government-sanctioned conention to recruit suicide bombers earlier this year.

It's just so hard to fathom the concept of these actions done with the full knowledge and support of a state that I think many in the West still refuse to believe it.

  • I think the issue when it comes to home-grown homophobia is that while yes, Iran et al are so much worse than any Western society as to be incomparable, the attitudes and hatred that permeate some people's views here come from the same intolerance, and if allowed to be unchallenged, could produce a similar effect.

Apartheid was official Sth African policy. Nigger-bashing wasn't official Southern US policy. The distinction, of course, is lost on a victim of a lynch mob.

Off topic -> have responded to the slate post, dunno if it makes any sense, but hey, I only have an hour for lunch ya know :-)
